WEEKLY OPEN STUDIO

Already have some clay experience and just need a space to work? Our Open Studio hours and studio memberships are for individuals who already have some experience in clay and can work without direction or instruction.

There is no teacher available during Open Studio hours but you can purchase clay as needed from the Studio Monitor on duty. Open studio hours are also great for current students who want more studio time beyond their class hours!

Children 12-15 years of age may register for Open Studio with a concurrently registered and attending parent/guardian only. We cannot accommodate children under 12 years of age in Open Studio.

Children 16-17 years of age may register for and attend Open Studio independently.

Firing and Glazes

• Fees for both bisque and glaze firings are included, but clay is sold separately (see below).
• Our bisque kilns fire to cone 06 and our glaze kilns fire to cone 6. Use of our cone 6 studio glazes is included.
• If you are buying commercial glazes, ensure they are for cones 5/6! Glazes for cones 06-04 will melt down in our glaze firings.

Buying or Bringing Clay

• A 25-lb bag of clay ranges from $25 - $39, depending on the type of clay body. We usually stock 6-8 different clay bodies to choose from but cannot guarantee all types will be in stock at all times.
• Clay can be purchased in advance from our online shop or in person from the Studio Monitor on duty.
• Low-fire clay and glazes (cones 06-04) may NOT be used in the Clay Center studio. They will melt down in our glaze firings. Clay bodies not purchased from us must be formulated for mid-range firing (cones 5/6).
• If you have a clay body purchased elsewhere that you would like to use in our studio, please send us the clay body name, product number, and manufacturer (Alligator, Laguna, etc) to verify if it can be used at the Clay Center. Our email address is info@nolaclay.org.

Good to Know

• We have some communal tools and towels available but we recommend you bring your own basic pottery tool kit and a towel for your use. We sell a basic pottery tool kit in our online shop.
• Open Studio Weekly users can rent a locker for an additional $10/month if one is available.
